Semen analysis

Semen analysis, or a sperm count, measures the number of sperm, sperm movement (motility), and other characteristics of semen that may affect fertility. This test is done when couples are infertile and when men have been sterilised (had a vasectomy), to make sure that there are no sperm in the semen. Having avoided sexual intercourse or ejaculation for 5 days before the test, you are asked to provide a semen sample, either by masturbating into a container or using a special condom during sexual intercourse.
What is it?
Semen analysis measures the total number of sperm, sperm motility (movement), as well as certain other characteristics of semen (fluid that is ejaculated) that may impact on fertility.
Why is it done?
Semen analysis is done to assess male fertility, in cases where a couple are infertile. It is also done in men who have had a vasectomy (male sterilisation procedure), to check that there are no sperm in the semen.
What happens?
Before – how to prepare
You should avoid sexual intercourse and ejaculation for 5 days before the test.
During – how the test is done
You need to provide the laboratory with a semen sample. This is usually done in one of two ways:
- Masturbation into a container.
- Sexual intercourse where a special condom is used – the condom collects the semen sample.
It is important that the sample reaches the laboratory within 2 hours.
After the test
The results will be available after a day or two.

There are no risks associated with this procedure.
Special Issues
Approximately a third of fertility problems, experienced by couples, are due to male fertility problems, which makes semen analysis a very important test.
