Psyllium

(Hydrophilic Mucilloid)

Description

The seeds of this herb have been used for centuries to treat diarrhoea, constipation, haemorrhoids, and urinary problems. Both diarrhoea and constipation may be treated, because the mucilage in the seeds swells with the addition of water to give bulk as well as lubrication to the bowel.

Recently it has been suggested that Psyllium may help prevent heart disease by clearing excess cholesterol from the body.

How It May Benefit You…

  • ulcers
  • colitis
  • constipation
  • hemorrhoidal irritation

Caution…

Some people may be allergic to the seeds.

You must drink 8 to 10 glasses of water throughout the day when taking Psyllium as a laxative, to prevent blockage of the intestines.

WARNING: Herbs should only be used under the supervision of an experienced herbalist or naturopath experienced in herbs.
